Food and meat hygiene

The ZVL provides information on the central consumer law provision in Section 40 of the German Food and Feed Code (LFGB) and has also compiled forms and information sheets on handling food.

§ Section 40 of the German Food and Feed Code (LFGB)

The transparency of government action and access to information serve to support consumers in making their own decisions on the market. Section 40 para. 1a LFGB also pursues this goal.

According to this, the authorities must inform the public if a food business operator has violated regulations that serve to comply with hygiene requirements or to protect consumers from health hazards or deception to a more than insignificant extent or repeatedly, and the imposition of a fine of a certain amount is to be expected. The infringement must be sufficiently justified on the basis of facts to the satisfaction of the authority.
