Illegal puppy trade in the Saale-Holzland district (SHK)

Increased illegal puppy trade in the SHK - the veterinary office asks for increased attention

There are currently an increasing number of cases of illegal puppy trading in the Saale-Holzland district. We therefore ask you to pay increased attention when buying puppies. Please pay particular attention to the following points:

  • An indication of illegal puppy trading is often the handing over of puppies in public places such as petrol stations, service stations, parking lots or similar. The seller does not conclude a sales contract with you and demands cash. It is often not possible to inspect the mother animal in such illegal sales. The seller usually shows little interest in how the puppy will grow up with you and whether you are suitable as a future owner.
  • In contrast to a reputable breeder, there is no inspection of the puppies beforehand; the puppies are sold and given to you at the first meeting.
  • Particular care should be taken with dog breeds that are currently in high demand, such as Pomeranians, French Bulldogs or Miniature Spitz.
  • Illegally imported puppies often become ill within a few days of purchase, as they are separated from their mother too early and have grown up in very poor conditions. In addition to the resulting financial burden for the necessary veterinary treatment, this can also result in a high emotional burden for the buyer.
  • If the puppies do not come from Germany, they may only enter Germany with a valid rabies vaccination and a so-called EU pet passport (blue passport). A puppy from another EU country cannot meet the requirements for legal transportation to Germany until it is 15 weeks old at the earliest. It is therefore essential that you ask to see the puppy's papers and check the origin and age of your new pet.

Further information and a short checklist on buying a puppy can be found on the website of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture.

Illegally imported puppies must be quarantined until all necessary entry requirements have been met. This also incurs high costs and is very detrimental to the development of the puppy's social behavior.

Before buying a puppy, please find out exactly about its origin, state of health and the seller. If there are any discrepancies or uncertainties, please contact the relevant veterinary office.
